Hi! My name is Rachelli Karp. I was born in Australia and made aliyah with my family when I was two years old. Right now I am finishing my second year of sherut leumi where I am working with elementary school children.
I was asked the question - if I lived in Australia and they had sherut leumi, would I volunteer? The reason why I wanted to do sherut in the first place was because I felt that Israel has been giving to me my entire life and I now had the opportunity to give back to my country. If I lived in Australia then that would be the country I would be giving back to. However, I am not sure I would spend two years volunteering. There’s a big difference between what I’m doing now and what I could have done there. Australia is a wonderful country with friendly people, but Eretz Yisrael is the homeland of my heart. The connection that I feel towards this country goes beyond citizenship or even gratitude. I believe that I have a deep connection to the Land of Israel and that it's my duty to do what I can to help it survive and thrive. Sherut leumi gives me the chance to help my people grow so that they can, in turn, help other people grow.
